PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

GDI continues to cultivate a growing audience by increasing the number of performers and partnerships resulting in greater community support.  GDI is able to continue providing culturally diverse performing art programs rooted in the African American cultural heritage while incorporating other cultures into all performances.

  •               ADULT DANCE CLASSES.  From foot stomping to hip swaying moves, Grand Designs newest program is its adult dance       classes.  A variety of dance classes are taught from two-stepping, swing, salsa to Cowboy Cha-Cha, adults are able to learn some grand dance steps.  Classes are taught at the Boettcher Boys and Girls Club.

  •               AMISTAD.  The story of Amistad, the famous slave revolt (La Amistad, the Spanish word for friendship), centers on the legal status of Africans caught and brought to America on a Spanish slave ship in 1839.  The trials of Amistad focused on the legality of slaves and what constituted freedom in the United States.  This production was written and directed by Hugo Sayles and premiered at the Aurora Fox Theatre, 9900 E. Colfax Avenue, February 3 and 4, 2006 and again in 2007 directed by Chris Tabb.

  • BOETTCHER AURORA BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB.  For many years, GDI has partnered with the Boettcher Aurora Boys and Girls Club to provide art instruction to economically-disadvantaged adolescents who might otherwise not have this experience. Youth members receive free instruction in a variety of areas including Chorale, Hip Hop Dance, Visual Arts, Precision Movement, Step Movement, Latin Dance and African Drumming.

  • EXPRESSIONS OF AN ACTIVIST.  Expressions of an Activist tells the story of Martin Luther King, Jr., and other noted Civil and Human Rights activist such as Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Cesar Chavez,  Mahatma Gandhi and Rosa Parks.  Expressions of an Activist premiered in 2003 at University of Denver.

  • HAT EXCHANGE.   Crown and glory, Grand Designs hat exchange program is a program to recycle exchange or swap and make available hats to church women.

  • GRAND DESIGN CHORALE.  The Grand Design Chorale hosts its annual Anniversary Concert and Performing Artists Tribute honoring unsung community performing artists and thanking supporters of Grand Design Inc., at the Aurora Fox Theatre, 9900 E. Colfax Avenue.  The concert attracts 200 community members.  It would be remiss not to spotlight the work of Grand Design soloists and musicians.  The Grand Design Chorale members have faithfully performed without compensation for over 13-years.  The honoraria from their performances have supported other programs of Grand Design Inc.

  • GRAND TOTS Jr. Jubilee Singers.  Our youngest group, the Grand Tots Jr. Jubilee Singers, currently have members ranging in ages 4-9.  The Grand Tots Jr. Jubilee Singers have performed in front of audiences over 300.  The sounds hailing from the voices of the Grand Tots Jr. Jubilee are comparable to the sweet melodies of Angels singing.

  • NEW CENTURY JUBLIEE CHOIR.  GDI created New Century Jubilee Choir Project, (NCJC), an assemblage of ethnic and culturally diverse choir groups.  The New Century Jubilee Choir has four concerts annually.  The New Century Jubilee Choir attracts an audience of approximately 200 to its quarterly performances in Arapahoe and Denver counties.  The New Century Jubilee core choir consists of 53 members including (Korean members; Japanese members; African American members--Grand Design Chorale and Living Hope Baptist Gospel members).

  • SUITE MOSES.  Tells the Biblical Exodus of Moses through music associated with the African American experience and correlating historical parallels to three other major faiths: Christianity, Islam and Judaism.  An annual event, SUITE MOSES appeals to a cross section of cultures and faiths. SM1 premiered in 2001.

Our programs and performances have reached thousands of audience members from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.  We believe that our persistent efforts truly have a positive impact on making Aurora and the Denver metropolitan area a better place to live; a place in which cultural differences are explored and embraced rather than feared and ignored.
